Who compiled the first English dictionary?

Robert Cawdrey compiled the first English dictionary, A Table Alphabeticall, in 1604. While Samuel Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language published in 1755 is more famous and was the first comprehensive one, Cawdrey's work came over a century earlier.
