Istelam, also spelled Istilam, is an Islamic ritual that involves touching, kissing, or gesturing towards the Hajar al-Aswad (Black Stone) during the circumambulation of the Kaaba (Tawaf). It is performed at the beginning and end of each of the seven circuits around the Kaaba. If a person cannot physically touch or kiss the stone, they should face it and make a gesture while reciting Takbeer (a phrase in praise of God).
