The depletion region of a PN junction is formed near the junction when electrons and holes diffuse across it and recombine. This leaves behind fixed (immobile) positively charged donor ions on the N-side and negatively charged acceptor ions on the P-side. Because the region is depleted of mobile charge carriers, it is called the depletion region. These immobile ions create the electric field and built-in potential barrier that oppose further diffusion of majority carriers.
The depletion region in a PN semiconductor consists of ______.
